Description
This app displays the results of flood modelling investigations undertaken by Environment Canterbury, Waimakariri District Council, and Selwyn District Council. Modelling has only been carried out for selected areas of the region. If model results aren't available for a given area, it could still be susceptible to flooding.
The model results represent a prediction of what may happen during flood events of a given magnitude. Details of the modelling methodology and sources of uncertainty can be found in the associated technical reports.
Four different flood model outputs are available:
• Peak water depth (metres above ground level) • Peak water level (metres above a known vertical datum - LVD1937 or NZVD2016
• Peak water velocity (metres per second)
• Hazard (Maximum of water depth (metres) and depth (metres) x velocity (metres per second)
Environment Canterbury holds other information about flooding. The flood model results are one of many tools that we use when carrying out site specific flood hazard assessments. If you are considering purchasing or developing a property, we strongly recommended that you contact us for further flooding and planning information.
You can contact our customer services team here or request a flood hazard assessment here.
Flood modelling requires many assumptions and is not an exact science.
