Description

This map is the underlying map for Environment Canterbury's Coastal Hazard Monitoring webapp. It is intended to show historic information that Environment Canterbury has on the two main coastal hazards within the Canterbury region, which are coastal erosion, and inundation of low-lying land adjacent to the coast by seawater, which typically occurs when a beach is overtopped by waves during large coastal storms.

Information on coastal erosion is presented in several different layers within this map:
Information on coastal inundation is presented in the RCEP - Sea Water Inundation Zone Boundary layer. This layer shows areas that have previously been inundated or flooded with seawater during coastal storm events.

The indicative position of the Coastal Marine Area boundary for the entire Canterbury coast is included in the map as this line is an important jurisdictional boundary as it determines which authority is responsible for activities on either side of the line.

Environment Canterbury's Coastal Hazard Zones 1 and 2 are included as these defined zones have rules attached to them in Environment Canterbury's planning documents which determine the type and scale of development or activity that can or cannot be carried out in these areas.
