Open data

Canterbury Maps offers access to a wide range of data, most of which is freely available for reuse and/or download from Canterbury Maps Open Data.

How do I find and download data?

What about big data (Imagery, LiDAR etc)?

Licensed for re-use

All data unless specifically stated is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.  Creative Commons License

This means you are free to use, reuse and share data as long as you attribute the work to Canterbury Maps and partners as the original source of the data.

Attribution

When attributing ECAN or CanterburyMaps and partners you need to credit the data source as below and include the licence type:

Sourced from the CanterburyMaps and partners and licensed for reuse under the CC BY 4.0 licence.

If you adapt this work (data) in any way or include it in a collection, and publish, distribute or otherwise disseminate that adaptation or collection to the public, the following attribution should be used:

Contains data sourced from the CanterburyMaps and partners licensed for reuse under CC BY 4.0

Licensed NOT for re-use

Unfortunately there is a small percentage of data on our site that is not available for re-use. Typically this is for 2 main reasons.

  1. The license of the data was acquired under a prohibited license.

  2. The data being displayed is not owned by any of the partners of Canterbury Maps.

Examples of data under a copyrighted license would be some of our aerial photography & LIDAR collections, such as a historical aerial imagery collection flown by NZAM in 1965 (Survey SN1786).
